Samer Singh Dawar: My dad resisted my decision of becoming an actor

Being an integral part of the industry and having a first hand experience of its inner workings, actor Samer Singh Dawar’s father was very hesitant in letting him enter the industry. It was then, that, the actor says that they came up with an agreement of Samer finishing his studies before entering the industry. And the rest just fell into place!

“I always say this line that I was born on the outskirts of the industry. What I mean is that my dad used to be a film distributor and I remember that when I was a very young kid, I was always looking forward to summer vacations as that’s when I could be with my dad, travel to Mumbai, come on the set, see how things work. I can actually be part of all this. I think back in that time I had in my head that I would become an actor. That’s when I made up my mind. When I went to London, it was a way for me to actually be closer to this industry as I had an agreement with my dad that I will first do my MBA and then I will live my dreams. He has seen the hardships of the industry and resisted my decision of becoming an actor. He thought that I would do well in education,” he says.

He adds, “However, I lost my dad back in 2016 and I was left without a path to proceed. So, I decided that along with doing my MBA and part-time job, I will also start doing something regarding my dream. My third task for every day or every week used to be in this field, and that’s when I started working as a background artist to understand the functioning and working of the set.”

Talking about how it all began, he says, “I remember my first film as a background artist was Judwa 2 back in 2016. I started as a background artist but then I got to know that they are looking for some dancers to shoot for Oonchi Hai Building and I auditioned for the same. I got selected for the same and began my journey as a background dancer. Soon, I established myself in this certain role and I was dancing in various locations across London. I was also dancing in various shows hired as a professional. I was a part of so many groups. I got enough money to pay my fees in Pinewood Studio.”

He adds, “Acting is something you learn every day. After my degree, I tried to do a few bigger projects and stepped out of the background zone. I was a feature artist in two Hollywood projects that were Born a King and Red Devil. Both are British productions. I was also a part of the Royal season 5 as a banana vendor. I also did a couple of advertisements. Then I decided to take a big leap and come to Mumbai and start my journey in Bollywood. After dancing in 15-16 Bollywood films, working under choreographers like Farah Ma’am, Remo sir, Ganesh sir, it was time to take the next step.”
